TOUR DESCRIPTION

Bangkok (Klong Toey) Shore Excursion

This Bangkok tour takes advantage of fantastic local transportation as you travel through the capital in an Eco-friendly manner. Join your guide for a ride on the Skytrain for great views of the city, and on to a public boat along the Chao Phraya River. After visiting Wat Pho and the Grand Palace, travel by local tuk tuk and canal boat to Jim Thompson's House Museum.

After meeting your guide at the Klong Toey Port in Bangkok, you depart for Bangkok traveling exclusively with public transportation. You travel to the nearest BTS Rail Station and get on the Skytrain (elevated train) for a ride into central Bangkok and to the Saphan Taksin Station on the banks of the Chao Phraya River.

Next you continue by public boat to Tha Thien pier where you disembark to visit Wat Pois, the oldest temple in Bangkok. This temple is the home to the awe inspiring reclining Buddha which is 160 feet long. This was also the first school of traditional medicine in Thailand and the founding place of Thai massage. Many people consider this the first University of Thailand.

Your next stop is the Grand Palace which is without a doubt a must see site when coming to this city. In fact it is one of the most visited sites in all of Thailand. The palace was the official home to the Kings of Siam (now Thailand) from 1782 until 1925. The current king lives in another palace, however, the Grand Palace is still used for several official royal functions each year.

The palace complex sits on the banks of the Chao Phraya River and is made up of several buildings, halls and pavilions set around large lawns, gardens and courtyards. Your visit includes the magnificent throne halls and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. This temple (or wat) is considered the most sacred of all Buddhist Temples in Thailand.

After seeing these important monuments you stop for lunch at "Steve Caf̩e and Cuisine" which is located near the river. Your included lunch are typical Thai dishes such as Spicy Lemon Grass Salad, Coconut Soup with Chicken, Spicy Pomelo Salad, Deep Fried Prawn with Tamarind Sauce, and more. (The lunch is included but drinks are chosen and paid for on the spot.)

In the afternoon you walk to the backpackers mecca of Khao San Road. This short road is a popular destination for young people and you can purchase items such as crafts, clothes, food, second hand books and other items that backpackers find handy.

Next you head to the Thai Champs Elys̩es, Ratchadamnoen, where you will get in tuk-tuks (motorized rickshaws) to reach the end of the avenue and the historical Klong (canal) Saen Saap. Once you are here you board the klong bus-boat and cross the city to the west, disembarking for a to visit Jim Thompsons House. This museum is a collection of various old structures from throughout Thailand. The American founder purchased the structures in the 1950s and 60s and brought them into Bangkok to create this museum.

Late this afternoon you have free time for shopping in one of the 5 huge shopping complex of the area (MBK, Siam Square, Siam Center, Siam Discovery, Siam Paragon).

At the end of the excursion you return to the cruise ship terminal.

Mobility: Difficult - a lot of walking and standing - NO wheelchairs
