TOUR DESCRIPTION

Toulon Shore Excursion

This full day Toulon shore trip visits the top of Mont Faron and the old town of Toulon plus a chance to explore the small resorts towns of Sanary and Bandol which are reminiscent to the French Riviera of years past. There is a chance to taste the local wine if you choose to do so.

Your driver guide will meet you at the pier in Toulon and immediately depart for the cable car ride to the top of Mont Faron (1,900 feet). You'll enjoy dramatic views of the sea and surrounding area and visit the memorial to the 1944 Allied landings in Provence.

When you return from the mountain you have some time to roam in one of the liveliest Provencal markets which takes place every morning in Toulon. You explore the pedestrian streets of the Old Town, strolling through passage ways and terraced sidewalks, admiring the local architecture and wall murals. You'll see Sainte Marie Majeure Cathedral and the Cours Lafayette with its 18th century "Three Dolphins' Fountain".

Next is free time for lunch (meal not included).

In the afternoon you depart for the tiny fishing village of Sanary-sur-Mer. You'll cast off the hoards of tourists and take in the beauty of the Mediterranean coast's steep cliffs and sapphire sea.

Sanary's port is the hub of all the action, but instead of outsized white yachts, you'll find red, blue, and green fishing boats gathered at the wharf. Outside, older men play patanque. Portside cafes offer a chance to rest and take in the scene. Patisseries line the cobble stoned streets, and the only rush is a local trying to get home while their baguette is still warm. If you are in port on Wednesday, Sanary shakes off its sleepiness with a grand market. More than 300 stands overflow with foie gras, baby artichokes, strawberries, scented soaps, sachets of Herbs de Provence, and olive oil.

Next your driver guide brings you to the nearby town of Bandol. The sheltered situation of Bandol has provided perfect conditions for wine making since 600 BC. This is arguably the most famous wine region of southern France, and the crisp, delicious Bandol rose wine defines summer as much as the cicada's rasp, or a cloudy glass of Pastis. You can taste the offerings from 29 regional producers at Maison des Vins du Bandol.

You return to the port of Toulon later this afternoon.

Please Note- The cable car is optional and is not included in the price. Expect to pay 9 Euro per person. Otherwise, your driver guide will drive you to the top of Mont Faron. Also, the cable car operates daily, however the memorial is closed on Mondays.
