TOUR DESCRIPTION

Ghent City Tour

This private Ghent walking tour is a perfect orientation for first time visitors to the medeival city of Ghent. It is an excellent tour if you only have a few hours or if you want to enhance a longer stay with a local Ghent guide.

Your Ghent guide will meet you at your hotel and then you set out on foot. At St. Michael's bridge you enjoy the city's most beautiful views in every direction. You see the Old Harbor with its Guild Houses and St. Michael's Church. It is by far the most photogenic spot in town. You continue your walk in the "Kuip" or heart of the old city where many beautiful buildings are seen at each corner.

In the heart of Ghent you see the Gothic Belfry Tower which dates from 1425. Almost as impressive is the Town Hall, which is a mix of architectural styles due to the various centuries through which it was built.

Both young and old enjoy the Castle of the Count, a rare medieval gem from the 12th century.

A highlight of the tour and your time in Ghent is a visit to its gothic Cathedral of Saint Baaf. The cathedral is a living museum of sculpture, carvings, wrought iron work and art. The most important painting is "The Adoration of the Lamb of God" by the Van Eyck brothers. Your guide will provide detailed descriptions of the many scenes in this triptych.

At the end of the tour you return to your hotel or you can stay in the old town to soak up the atmosphere.

If you have additional time we recommend visiting the interior of the Castle of the Count where you can access the ramparts or visit the museum of medieval torture devices. For those up for a climb, you might consider going to the top of the bell tower for spectacular views of Ghent. Finally, if you are staying overnight, Overpoortstraat is filled with pubs and bars, making it a great place to people-watch or get to know the locals.
