TOUR DESCRIPTION

Visby (Gotland) Shore Excursion

This four hour Visby tour includes a driving tour to several locations in Visby where you can stop for photos. Then you drive into the countryside to a popular look-out point, followed by a visit to a seaside cafe which is in the former home of Swedish Princess Eugenie.

Your driver and guide meet you at the pier and you immediately begin your tour at the old Hanseatic Harbor, now known as Almedalen Park, where you will enjoy a spectacular view of the medieval city.

Next enjoy a drive on the medieval streets of Visby, among the town walls and cozy alleys. There you will see St. Mary’s Cathedral, the view from the top of town, the old 13th century warehouses, one or several medieval church ruins, and the Botanical Gardens. It is possible to make stops at all places for a visit or for photos.

Visby can be appreciated as much for the depth of its fascinating historical significance, as well as its modern day charm as a clean, beautiful, small city in which parks, gardens and flowers abound. History tells of the Viking Age, a flourishing medieval period and the growth of the powerful Hanseatic League, but today Visby is equally well known as the town of roses and ruins.

Because of its unique cultural values, the Hanseatic Town of Visby has been listed by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage. Since the end of the 19th century, the ruins of Visby have been protected as historical monuments. The sea wall was first built in the 12th and 13th centuries and the town wall was added in the early 13th century. Today the wall is the best-preserved town wall in northern Europe. Behind the town wall with its 44 guard towers, this medieval stone city awaits your discovery.

After visiting Visby you drive into the countryside to a popular look-out point called Högklint, with a beautiful view over the sea and Visby in the distance. You enjoy a coffee break at Fridhem (which was originally the 19th century home of the Swedish Princess Eugenie.

You can sit in the garden and enjoy the sea-view (drinks not included in tour price). The cafe serves coffee and other drinks plus cakes, waffles, sandwiches and salads. At the end of the tour the driver will bring you back to the pier.
