This half-day
Salalah shore excursion will introduce you to Salalah, the Sultanate's summer capital. You have a chance to see and learn about the famous Frankincense tree, plus visit the Tomb of Job, the biblical hero. In the city you see the majestic Al Hosn Palace and visit a local market.
After meeting your guide at the pier, you begin with a drive past beautiful scenery on the famed Frankincense road to Yemen. Make a stop at the solitary frankincense tree. The Dhofar Frankincense species is unique to Southern Arabia. This nondescript, smooth-barked tree produces a substance, once one of the most prized items in the ancient civilized world. Thousands of years ago, caravans would start from here on their long journey west, bearing crystals of this unique scent produced from the sap. While you are here you will learn about the key role frankincense plays in the region.
Next you will drive through the picturesque mountains to the Tomb of Job, the biblical hero admired by Muslims, Jews and Christians worldwide. Visit this simple tomb, located on a hilltop overlooking Salalah, and see what locals believe to be the footprint of Job himself, pressed into the concrete floor.
Returning to the city, you will have the chance to enjoy a local favorite: fresh coconut juice before making a photo stop at the majestic Al Hosn Palace, summer residence of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos.
Continue on to the vibrant Frankincense Souq (Market) in the old part of Salalah. Enjoy the fragrance of frankincense and sandalwood as you wander the maze of narrow lanes. In local markets it is expected that you bargain for the best price.
After exploring the delightful wonders of the Souq, you will return to the ship.
Special Note: Shorts, beachwear or sleeveless outfits are not appropriate attire for this tour. Ladies must cover their head with a scarf at Job's tomb. If you do not have one, it will be provided at the site.
