Mumbai, India - This tour allows visitors to escape the bustling metropolis of Mumbai and instead visit the serene and beautiful Elephanta Island which is most known for the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Elephanta Caves.

After meeting your guide at the pier, you drive along the beach front until you reach the Gateway of Mumbai, one of the countries most prized possessions. This huge monument is located on the waterfront in South Mumbai and it greets visitors as a reminder to the imperial bygone era of the city. It is near here where you will board a boat for the one hour journey to Elephanta Island.

Elephanta Island is one of the top attractions near Mumbai and it is a great place to get away from the concrete and hustle of the huge metropolis. Compared to the city, the island is quiet and lush and its top site is the Elephanta Caves complex. These caves house rock cut temples dating back to the 5th century. In addition to being an UNESCO World Heritage Site, the place resonates with the spiritual energy of India. The caves are a perfect expression of archaic Indian art associated to the cult of Lord Shiva.

The island was named by the Portuguese when they discovered the large stone statue of an elephant near the landing area of the island. In addition to the caves you will get beautiful pictures of the rock sculptures with the Arabian Sea in the background.

You may have some free time for souvenir shopping at a local flea market just a short walk from the caves. You'll find marble sculptures, jewelery, clothing and wood items. If you are looking for Indian artifacts, then there is no better place than Elephanta Island.

After your visit to the island you return to the mainland, again by boat and then vehicle back to the pier.
