TOUR DESCRIPTION

Dubrovnik Shore Excursion

This full day Dubrovnik shore trip allows you to see the highlights of Dubrovnik's old town, ride the cable car above the city for amazing views and then visit the Konavle region where you enjoy a traditional Croatian lunch and visit a local family's home for a wine tasting.

Your private guide will meet you at the pier to begin your Dubrovnik shore excursion. First you ride the cable car which takes you high above the city for amazing panoramic views of Dubrovnik's city walls, ancient rooftops, picturesque buildings, the sea and the surrounding mountains. Get your camera ready!

When you return from the cable car you drive to the city's Pile Gate where the statue of the city's patron St. Blaise welcomes you. From here you began to explore Dubrovnik on foot walking along the city's main promenade which is paved with marble and lined with store fronts and caf̩s.

On your tour you will visit the Franciscan monastery which was built in the Romanesque-Gothic style and considered to be an architectural masterpiece. Inside the monastery you visit a pharmacy which opened its doors in 1317, making it the oldest operating pharmacy in all of Europe.

Next you visit the baroque Cathedral and its Treasury. The current cathedral was finished in 1671 to replace a Romanesque Cathedral which was destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1667. The main altar features a painting of The Assumption by Titian (1552). The Cathedral Treasury is known for its collection of 138 reliquaries, most of which are traditionally carried in procession around the city on the feast of St. Blaise (February 3rd).

This afternoon you drive into the countryside south of Dubrovnik. The area is called the Konavle region. This name comes from man made water channels which allowed the area's rivers to be diverted and used for hundreds of old water mills throughout the region. These mills allowed the region to produce large amounts of grain, wine and olive oil. One could say the Konavle Region was the breadbasket of the area.

Your first stop is at a location where you can walk among the water channels beneath a canopy of shade trees. You will see people in traditional folk costumes and an old mill in operation. While you are here, you enjoy a typical Croatian meal which is cooked "under the iron bell". This style of cooking involves putting meats or fish, vegetables and potatoes on top of very hot coals which are then covered by a large iron bell shaped lid so that the food is slowly roasted to perfection. This ideal setting is a wonderful location for lunch.

Next you will visit a typical Konavle style home which has been in the Glavic family for generations. You will see what it would have been like to live in the region one hundred years ago. The family will welcome you as their guests and you will learn how the local people produce grape brandy, olive oil and wine in the traditional Croatian way. Your visit includes a sampling of the local wine / brandy and if you wish, you'll have the chance to purchase some home made products and hand-work made in the region.

Finally you will return to your ship back in Dubrovnik.
