Budapest City Tour

This Budapest tour provides you the highlights of Hungary's capital city, also known as the Queen of the Danube. The city is divided by the Danube River and in the past was actually 3 different cities named Buda, Old Buda and Pest. In 1849 the Chain Bridge connected the two side and in 1873 they became a united city and combined their names to become Budapest. Today your Budapest excursion will explore both sides of the river Danube.

On the Pest side of the Danube River you will see sights such as the Heroes Square, the State Opera House, the Hungarian Parliament, the Royal Palace and St. Stephen's Basilica.

The Hungarian Parliament is Budapest's most recognizable building and was part of a building boom for the 1896 exhibition to celebrate Hungary's 1,000 year anniversary. The building itself was inspired by the London House of Parliament.

Heroes Square was also built for the 1896 exhibition and is the gateway into the beautiful city park. On top of a large column you will see the Archangel Gabriel and the statues below are the seven leaders of the tribes who conquered the region in the year 896 AD. The colonnade also holds statues of famous historical figures and your guide will use this spot to teach you some of the country's history.

On the Buda side of the Danube River you explore the Castle District with its unique medieval atmosphere. Here you will find some of the most important sites in the city including the Fishermen's Bastion. This structure with pointed towers was built on the spot of a former fisherman's village and market. It was also built for the 1896 celebrations and has since become a landmark of Budapest. From the balconies of the bastion you have wonderful views over Pest and the Parliament across the Danube.

You also visit Matthias Church with its tall Gothic tower and colorfully tiled roof which dominate the main square of the Castle District. The original church dates back to the 13th century. It was rebuilt and enlarged several times, resulting in this 19th century version. What makes this church unique are the large colorful murals that cover the walls, pillars and ceiling, giving a very eastern (almost far East) feel. Several coronations of Hungary's kings took place here.

Before ending the tour your guide will take you to the top of Gellert Hill where you enjoy the most stunning views over the whole city. On the top of the hill you also see a large Citadel that the Habsburg's built to keep an eye over the city.
