TOUR DESCRIPTION

Zadar Shore Excursion

This Zadar shore trip explores the old town allowing you to peel back the many layers of Zadar's history which dates back to the 9th century. You see Roman ruins, medieval marvels and a modern day musical instrument which is operated by the sea.

Zadar is the historical center of the Dalmatia Region which is the most popular area for tourism in Croatia. The city has about 75,000 people many of whom live in postwar housing. However your walking tour is in the charming Old Town of Zadar which is situated on a peninsula, and its history dates back to the 9th century. Much of the city was built in Roman times and that is evidence by the ruins seen today. However the area is more medieval in style today and shows a large influence from the Venetians who were here for several centuries.

After meeting your guide, you drive from the pier to the old town of Zadar. You enter the old town on foot through one of the old gates that still has a Venetian lion statue. You will be pleased with the white stone streets that date from Roman times and the high wall which was built by the Venetians. Your tour includes an interior visit to the Church of St. Donatus which is a Byzantine style building dating back to the 9th century. You also see the 13th century cathedral of St Anastasia.

Other highlights include the oldest Gothic church in Dalmatia and the ruins of the Roman Forum which date back to the glory days as a Roman colony. A modern treasure is the popular Sea Organ which was built in 2005 and captures the movement of the waves and turns the sound into music. It's mournful melodies are reminiscent of the sea and wind.

At the end of your tour you drive back to the pier or you can enjoy free time and take a short taxi ride back on your own.
