If you only have a short time available then a visit to Volos and the hill top village of Makrinitsa is an excellent half day option. After meeting your driver and licensed guide you begin your tour.

Volos stands at the head of the Gulf of Pagasae which is almost enclosed by the Magnesia peninsula. The natural setting of Volos is it's main attraction. You start your tour by driving along the waterfront to the Archeology Museum. Here you will see beautiful jewelry which dates back 3,500 years. You also see a unique collection of painted grave stones from ancient Hellenistic times.

After your museum visit you drive up the slopes of Mount Pelion, one of the most beautiful regions of Greece. This area receives more rain than much of the country so you see lush vegetation and an abundant amount of trees. There are a number of small quaint villages which are quite delightful. On your tour, you visit our favorite, Makrinitsa.

Makrinitsa clings to the mountainside at an elevation of about 2,250 feet and is aptly called the Balcony of Pelion. Due to the steep slope, the traditional houses were built with three stories at the front, and only one at the back, giving the impression they are stacked one on top of another.

While you are here you enjoy exploring the narrow cobbled streets, leading you towards the main square with its old hollow plane tree, a sculpted marble fountain and the little church of Agios Ionnis. You will marvel at the unparalleled view of Volos below and your ship in the bay. You return to the pier 3 hours after you began.
