TOUR DESCRIPTION

Varna Shore Excursion

This private Varna shore trip offers you the chance to see the most possible in a day. Included are the Aladzha Rocky Monastery, the Balchik Quiet Nest Palace and one of Varna's famous Orthodox churches.

After meeting your guide you start the tour with a visit to the Aladzha Rocky Monastery which is located about 15 miles away from Varna inside the Golden Sands Nature Reserve. This protected historical site was used as far back as the 4th century but the main monastery complex was carved out of the rocks in the 13th century. You will marvel at the amazing frescoes and mural paintings which can be seen in the former monk's cells and the chapel.

Next you travel to the small picturesque town of Balchik which is locate on the Northern Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The town is well known for its beautiful Palace called the Quiet Nest palace. The Palace was built between 1926 and 1937 for Queen Marie of Romania, during the Romanian control of the region.

The large green area of the palace complex consists of residential villas, a wine cellar, a power station, a monastery, a holy spring, a chapel and many other buildings, as well as most notably a park that is today a botanical garden. A guided walking tour of the complex will take you to the most interesting buildings and show you the prettiest view of the sea and the world of the Queen Maria.

Following the palace visit is an included 3-course lunch. The meal consists of salad, meat or fish and dessert. If you require vegetarian, please advise at the time of reservation. Drinks are not included.

Later this afternoon you return to Varna to visit the Orthodox Cathedral which was built in 1880 shortly after the Liberation of the Ottoman rule. The cathedral has a wealth of local religious art dating back from the 19th century. Coming to Bulgaria and missing one of the orthodox churches is almost like visiting Rome without seeing the Vatican.

Depending on time, you can enjoy some free time in Varna before returning to the port.
