This St. Tropez shore trip visits the beautiful Rayol-Canadel Gardens which are often referred to as the Garden of Eden. For natural garden lovers, this is an excellent option.
Facing the Golden Islands, the Rayol-Canadel Gardens stretches out into an oasis of greenery. Wedged between the sea, the Maures mountains, the rocky coast of headlands, creeks and bays is this stunning garden with plants and trees from all over the world.
The Coastal Preservation Agency acquired the property in 1989 where Date Palms, Eucalyptus, Agave, Mimosa, Heather and Strawberry trees were flourishing. Gardener and botanist Gilles Clement was given the task of redesigning the grounds and he proposed creating a "planetary garden", to contain all species which thrive in a Mediterranean-type climate: the Mediterranean Basin, South and South West Australia, the Californian and Chilean coasts and southwest South Africa. This range now also extends to species from other subtropical, temperate and arid climate zones: the Canaries, Asia, Argentina, New Zealand and Mexico.
Enjoy the "Mediterranean Gardens" and wander along the paths and trails, observing the play of light and shadow, enjoying the cool shade of the Eucalyptus, contemplating the commanding view of the sea below, and discovering various types of shrubs: the South African Fynbos, the Chilean Matorral, the Australian Mimosas, the Provencal Maquis and the Californian Joshua Tree.
At the end of your time in the gardens, you return to St. Tropez.
