StonehengeSouthampton, England -This full day tour visits the prehistoric monument known as Stonehenge. You also enjoy a visit to the charming town of Salisbury and a a visit to its famous Cathedral with Britain's tallest spire.

After meeting your guide at the port, you immediately depart for the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge. This prehistoric monument is one of the most important in the world, dating back an astonishing 5,000 years. The monument stands on a small mound in a vast plain in the countryside, not far from Salisbury. You can't help feeling excitement and perhaps a little fear about this mysterious site whose exact purpose is unknown. As you walk around the stones and learn about their mystery you will be surprised at their large size.

Next you drive to Salisbury, the historic city and market town that grew up around the cathedral. Salisbury dates back to 1220 when the hill top settlement of Old Sarum moved to this location.

Upon arrival, you enjoy a walking tour of city which developed on a plan of being a market town. Different areas were dedicated to different trades, such as Fish Row, Butcher Row and Poultry Cross. Today you will still see many charming timber framed houses in the area.

These special districts all site under the shadow of the famous Salisbury Cathedral. After free time for lunch and time to explore on your own, you will visit this famous edifice.

Built in just 38 years (1220-1258AD), the Salisbury Cathedral is a magnificent example of early English Gothic architecture surrounded by 8 acres of lawn and Britain's largest medieval Close.  Fascinating treasures include the best preserved copy of only four surviving Magna Carta which forms the basis of the American constitution. Salisbury Cathedral has Britain's tallest spire (404 feet) and Europe's oldest working clock (1386AD). Your visit is definitely the highlight of the day.

Later this afternoon you return to the pier in Southampton.
