South Queensferry, Scotland -This full day tour visits St. Andrews, known as the home of golf and Scotland's oldest university. You visit the famous Cathedral and Castle during your tour.
After meeting your private guide at the pier you immediately depart for St. Andrews. You will enjoy a short stop to see the spectacular 19th century Forth Rail Bridge which is a remarkable cantilever structure that is regarded as an engineering marvel. The bridge was built to carry the two tracks of the North British Railway one and a half miles over the Firth of Forth between South Queensferry and North Queensferry, at a height of 150 feet above the high tide.
St Andrews is a small town with a sizeable reputation that attracts visitors from all over the world.
The ruins of the castle of the Archbishops of St Andrews date back to the 13th century. Notable features include the dungeon and mines tunneled during the siege that followed the murder of Cardinal Beaton in 1546. These siege works are the finest of their kind in Europe.
A fascinating exhibition in the visitor center brings the history of the castle and cathedral to life.
Next you visit the remains of St Andrew's Cathedral, the largest in Scotland. The precinct walls are particularly well preserved. The Cathedral Museum houses an outstanding collection of early and late medieval sculpture and other relics found on the site including the magnificent St Andrews Sarcophagus. St Rule's Tower is part of the first church of the Augustinian canons at St Andrews which was built in the early 12th century. There are splendid views from the top.
Following these visits is free time for lunch on your own or we can arrange a typical Scottish meal. You also enjoy some free time in the town to explore or make souvenir purchases.
Later this afternoon you return to the port via the coast passing charming towns such as Crail, Pittenweem and Anstruther.
