This six hour tour enjoys a Pula walking tour plus a visit to the fiord in the Lim Bay and the town of Rovinj. After meeting your private guide at the pier you start your walk to the Amphitheater. Known as the Arena of Pula, this is by far the "must visit" sight in the city. It was built in the 1st Century AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at the same time as the magnificent Coliseum in Rome. Like its counterpart in Rome, it was used for gladiator fights.
After your visit of the Arena you continue your walk passing by the Twin Gates and City Walls. In ancient and medieval times the whole city was surrounded by walls which contained ten entry gates. The walls became unnecessary and were pulled down in the 19th century. You will see parts of the walls between the Twin Gates and the Giardini square which have been preserved.
You will visit the Triumphal Arch of the Sergi or the “Golden Gate” which was erected between the years 29 and 27 BC. This famous arch was built by the Sergi family in honor of three members of the family who held important positions in Pula at that time. You end your tour with a visit to the The Forum with its Temple of Augustus which is dedicated to the Goddess Roma and Emperor Augustus.
After your Pula walking tour you meet your driver and depart for the Lim Bay. This is one of the most beautiful natural resources of the Istrian peninsula. A highlight is the Lim Fiord which is part of the 20 mile long Lim Valley (Draga) that stretches from the center of Istria to the town of Pazin.
The Fiord itself is a little bit longer than 6 miles and is about 90 feet deep and at its widest point is about 1800 feet wide. Very steep mountains rise from both sides of the fiord. While you are here there is a chance to sample the local wine and oysters, a specialty in the region.
Next is a stop in the charming town of Rovinj which rises up on a peninsula and has been witness to the accomplishments of its past artisans. The limited space available led to the construction of narrow buildings, tiny streets and small town squares. Of particular note are the characteristically designed chimneys. The town itself was declared a cultural monument in 1963.
You return back to the pier in Pula about six hours after you began.
