Naples, Italy - This full day tour is a must for die-hard fans of Roman Antiquity. After you meet your guide at the port you immediately head into the city center for the Archeological museum. The museum is often mentioned among the most important archaeological museums in Europe. It is here where you will enjoy the bronzes, marbles, paintings and furnishings found in the excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Naples is a large, bustling, multi-cultural European city. While you are in Naples you see the church of Santa Chiara (built in 1340 AD), the theater of San Carlo, the vacant Royal Palace in Piazza Plebiscito and the Piazza Municipio where the castle of Maschio Angioino is located.
Free time is scheduled for you to enjoy lunch. Naples is most famous for its thick crusted pizza and also for spaghetti.
This afternoon you visit Pompeii where you will have 2 hours to explore the site. Pompeii was once a major port, as well as a center of wealth and politics. When Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, the city was almost instantly buried beneath 30 feet of volcanic ash and cinder. A huge part of the bay was also filled in with debris during the disaster, leaving the ruined metropolis some distance from today's shoreline.
This ancient site is perhaps the most famous archeological excavation in the world. Buried for 1,700 years, the town has been resurrected and presents a clear picture of daily life in ancient times. At the height of its influence, 20,000 people lived in Pompeii, and it is estimated that 2,000 of them perished instantly when volcanic ash rained down on the city.
At the end of the tour you’ll be taken back to your ship.
