This La Spezia shore trip visits the amazingly beautiful Cinque Terre. You'll travel by vehicle, train, boat and hike along paths carved into cliffs high above the sea. For many people, the Cinque Terre is a "must see" in Italy.
The Cinque Terre, or Five Lands, is one of Italy's most idyllic seaside cluster of villages. The Cinque Terre is now a National Park that encompasses about 10 miles of the rocky coastline. Within the park are five villages tucked away in small inlets or perched on rocky promontories. Time has stood still for these five villages, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Until the last hundred years they were not even accessible by car or train, but only by boat or foot paths. As a result the residents adapted to their natural surroundings. Buildings start at the sea and climb the cliffs towards the sky, and terraced hills have been cultivated with vineyards and olive groves.
After meeting your driver and guide you drive to the Cinque Terre and the driver leaves you with the guide in the village of Monterosso al Mare. This is the largest of the villages and most accessible for cars. However, the town is still very charming and hosts the largest beach in the area. After visiting Monterosso, you take a train to Manarola.
You'll enjoy a walk of the enchanting village of Manarola with its tiny fishermen's wharf before heading onto the Lovers Walk or Via dell Amore. This is an easy 25 minute walk that is carved into the steep rocks which rise dramatically out of the sea. You will be thrilled by the Mediterranean scenery with the bluest water, herbal aromas and fascinating isolated inlets.
This footpath leads you to Riomaggiore, the oldest village in the Cinque Terre. After taking time to explore Riomaggiore you'll take a boat to Vernazza (or by train in the event of high winds).
In Vernazza you have free time to explore the local shops and enjoy lunch (meal not included) as you marvel at this picturesque village huddled around its small harbor.
Later this afternoon you'll return by boat to the ferry terminal in La Spezia. Once you are there you meet your driver again who takes you to the larger cruise ship terminal.
