Kotor, Montenegro -This full day includes a walking tour of Kotor, a boat excursion to the village of Perast and the island of Our Lady of the Rocks, plus visits to the resort towns of St. Stefan and Budva.
After meeting your guide at the pier, you walk to your awaiting private boat. You enjoy a cruise along the coast to Perast. This small city is a beautiful example of baroque architecture. In Perast you have a short walk among buildings and villas which were built during the city's prosperous years of the 17th and 18th centuries. There were 14 churches built during that period, among them is the unfinished parish church of St Nicholas. This building is a Venetian-Romanesque variant of baroque from the 17th century. Its bell tower is 179 feet high and an inscription proudly reads that the Turkish threat ended after the Venetians conquered Herceg Novi and Risan. Although left open to the sky, the great apse of the main altar makes a significant contribution to the coastline of Perast.
After your walk in Perast you sail to the island of Gospa od Skrpjela (Our Lady of the Rocks). This man-made Island was built by scuttling old ships and depositing stones around a small crag. According to legend, the islet was made over the centuries by the seamen who kept an ancient oath. Upon returning from each successful voyage, they laid a rock in the bay. Over time, the islet gradually emerged from the sea. You will visit the church which was built in 1667. It is a single-nave, modestly proportioned church in the Byzantine style. The interior of the church was decorated by Tripo Kokolja, a famous 17th-century painter from Perast. On the altar is the famous icon of Our Lady of the Rock..
Next you cruise back to Kotor where you enjoy a walking tour walk through the maze of Kotor's medieval quarter, its bustling market and among beautiful Renaissance buildings. The well preserved fortified walls of Kotor protect it from the sea and at nearly 3 miles long it is considered one of the world’s historic values.
You visit the Cathedral of St. Tryphon which was constructed in 1166 and built on the remains of a former temple from the 9th century. You will see the remains from 14th century frescos and the valuable treasury with both local and Venetian golden works dating from the 14th to the 20th centuries.
Early this afternoon you stop in Saint Stefan, a luxurious resort that once used to be a small fishing village, first mentioned in the middle of 15th century. This small island is connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. In total there is about 1 mile of pink sand beaches.
Next you drive to the ancient town of Budva which is the most famous resort in Montenegro. While you are in Budva you have free time for lunch and also a walking tour of the village. Budva is considered to be one of the oldest settlements on the Balkan Peninsula. The old town of Budva lies on a little island that was linked to the land by a sandbar and in time turned into a peninsula. It is surrounded by ramparts originating from the XV century including a medieval fortification system with city gates, defense walls and towers. Inside the walls the town is a combination of narrow streets and little squares with valuable monuments of different Mediterranean cultures.
You return to Kotor later this afternoon.
