This full day tour combines the two half day tours giving you the chance to see the best sights from the port of Klaipeda. After meeting your driver and guide at the port in Klaipeda, you immediately drive north to Palanga.
Lithuania is known as the "Land of Amber" because the Baltic sea scatters amber along the country's beautiful shoreline. Palanga became a summer resort in the 19th century because of its sandy beaches, pine forests and mild climate. When you arrive in Palanga you stop at a beautiful park where you enjoy a walk to the city's famous Amber Museum which is housed in the 19th century palace of the noble Tyszkiewicz family. You also enjoy the palace's popular botanical gardens.
After visiting the museum and gardens you stroll to one of the popular beaches where you enjoy a short amount of time to see if you can find a piece of Amber yourself. Then you enjoy some free time in the charming town which has tree lined streets with small wooden bungalows that are used as summer retreats.
Following your visit to Palanga you drive back to Klaipeda where you enjoy a driving tour. Klaipeda in general is a large industrial port city. For many centuries the city was ruled by German speaking authorities. During WWII the city was used as a German submarine port and ultimately the city was almost completely destroyed. Your tour focuses on an old German part of the town which has been restored to its former glory.
You stop in Klaipeda where you have the chance to enjoy lunch on your own before starting your afternoon excursion to Nida.
The Curonian Spit is a 60 mile long sandbank which stretches from the Sambian Peninsula in Russia to Klaipeda, Lithuania. The Spit is home to the highest sand dunes in Europe and in the year 2000 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One one side of the dunes is the Baltic Sea and on the oterh side the Kursiu Lagoon.
To fully appreciate the journey you will start by taking a ferry from Klaipeda to Smiltyne. From here you meet your vehicle and drive to the city of Neringa and the resort of Nida, which is near the Russian border. During the journey you you will see lagoons, the famous sand dunes and small fishing villages.
In Nida you have the chance to see a typical cottage as you visit the Summer Cottage of Thomas Mann. Thomas Mann was a German novelist and essayist who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929 for his epic Buddenbrooks. He is also well known for his novel Death in Venice.
You return to the ship in Klaipeda later this afternoon.
