Hvar Shore Excursion

This Hvar shore trip tour allows you to get an excellent orientation to the charming town of Hvar. During your walking tour you enjoy wonderful views of the town, explore its popular Franciscan monastery and have some free time as well.

The picturesque island of Hvar is located off Croatia's Makarska Riviera. The Syracusans of Issa founded the town of Hvar on the island during the Fourth Century BC. Due to the strategic position on ancient sea routes, Hvar has been the subject of conflicts throughout the centuries. In the early part of the 15th century Hvar town was the wealthiest in Dalmatia, only to be razed to the ground by the Turks in 1571. During Venetian rule the harbor was used for fleets departing to and returning from the Orient and the islands elegant 16th century capital has remained Venetian in both style and character. As part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hvar began to promote itself as a health resort, capitalizing on its wonderful climate. It remains a popular holiday resort to this day and is famed for its fine beaches, endless fields of lavender and plentiful sunshine.

Hvar is perfect for exploring on foot and your private guide will show you the cultural and historical heritage of the town which is the islands principle settlement and acclaimed as one of the most attractive in Dalmatia. Beginning at the Promenade, your first visit is to the waterside Franciscan monastery, which was originally built as a retreat for sailors during the 15th century. From the walled gardens, whose trees include a 300-year-old cypress, you can enjoy superb views over the harbor and the Pakleni Islands. Next you walk into the town center where many of the buildings date from the Renaissance period. Your guide will show the hidden treasures of this pretty Adriatic town.

After your walking tour you enjoy some free time.

Note: Comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen are recommended. Modest dress is required for the monastery, shorts are not allowed and shoulders should be covered.
