Catania Shore Excursion - This tour is excellent option for those who are fans of all things ancient Greek. Your tour provides a window into the history of the Mediterranean region. The vast archaeological site is a rare treasure of temples, amphitheaters and an ancient castle. In addition to visiting the ruins, you also visit the island of Ortigia which is a part of modern day Syracuse but also contains many ruins.

After meeting your guide in Catania you depart for Siracusa, located on the southeastern coast of Sicily and was founded in the 8th century BC by Greek colonists from ancient Corinth. The city was named by the famous poet Cicerone, "the greatest and most beautiful of all the Greek cities". The whole city was declared a World Heritage Site in 1995 due to the high number of Greek ruins located here.

You will see remains of the Greek Theater which was located in the heart of the ancient city. The excellent acoustics made it an important place for speeches and theatrical performances. This was one of the largest Greek theaters ever built. In 212 BC the Romans conquered the city and they built the third largest Roman amphitheater in Italy, remains of which can be seen today.

You visit the Ortigia Island where you guide will tell you the Greek myth of Arethusa and the river god of Alpheus at the spot of the famous Fountain of Arethusa. The island is also a very popular spot in modern Syracuse so time is allowed for you to enjoy lunch (meal not included)

Syracuse also has some ancient temples partially intact, of which the most famous is the Temple of Apollo, the oldest of Sicily. Located near the Piazza Pantalica, the temple was adapted to a church in Byzantine times and to a mosque under Arab rule. Later in history the Arabs and the Normans conquered the city and there influence can also be felt in the city's architecture.

After a full day of exploring these exciting sites, you return to Catania.
