This half day tour provides Bilbao's highlights plus a visit to the city's famous Guggenheim Museum. After meeting your private driver and licensed guide at the pier, you immediately depart for the city and the museum.
The Guggenheim Museum was opened to the public in October of 1997. More than 35.000 titanium tiles cover the surface of the museum, each one has a different shape and had a unique place to be fixed. The Salomon R. Guggenheim Foundation provides Bilbao with part of the collections from the New York and Venice Museums.
The building of the museum itself is a monument representing modern Bilbao. It was designed by the architect Frank Gehry and features an impressive hall which is nearly 150 feet high and made of glass. The building has been considered one the greatest architectural expressions of the end of 20th century.
During your guided visit you will admire art from the most modern artists such as Chagall, Kandinsky, Matisse, Picasso, Chillida, Tápies and many others. At the end of this interesting visit, you will be given some time to stroll around the impressive shop of the Museum to look for that special souvenir.
Next you will enjoy a driving tour of Bilboa which includes the main avenues of the city. You will admire the beautiful "Ensanche" area including the Albia Gardens, San Nicolás Church and the Alamedas that surround the city. During this scenic drive you will reach the top of the Mount Artxanda where the vista over the city will amaze you. From here you see the 19th century bridges over the Nervión River and the most modern ones constructed in the last decade by re-known architects such as Santiago Calatrava.
Finally you enjoy a short walking tour of the Old Town of Bilbao where you have a chance to taste the delicious “Pintxos”. These pieces of bread are topped with local ingredients and are a popular appetizer or tapas.
After visiting the old town you return to the pier.
