TOUR DESCRIPTION

Belfast Shore Excursion

This private Belfast tour is perfect for first time visitors who only have a few hours available. You enjoy a driving tour of the city plus visits to St. Anne's Cathedral and the city's beautiful Botanic Gardens.

After meeting your guide you immediately start with a Belfast city tour where you see sites such as the leaning Albert Memorial Clock Tower (Ireland's answer to the Tower of Pisa) and the Opera House, which is one of Belfast's great landmarks. Also seen are the City Hall with it's Titanic Memorial, The Crown Bar (dates from 1885) and Queens University, which is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.

Depending on your interest you may see the Harland and Wolfe Shipyard where the Titanic was built and launched in 1912, or possibly you prefer the Shankill and Falls Road which gives you an indication of how life was during Belfast's past times of trouble.

You stop for a visit at St. Anne's Cathedral which was never actually finished, despite the combination of work by eight architects and over 80 years of construction. Work began in 1899, with the original design by Sir Thomas Drew, and it opened for worship in 1904. The heavily ornate west front boasts three portals, dedicated as a memorial in 1927. The church has an interesting mosaic covered Chapel dedicated to St. Patrick. The Cathedral has only one tomb and that is the grave of Edward Carson, the Dublin barrister, who successfully negotiated the North-east of Ireland remaining as part of the United Kingdom.

Next you enjoy a visit to the Botanic Gardens which were once privately owned and date from 1827. The centerpiece is the fine cast-iron and curvilinear glass Palm House that houses palms and other hothouse flora. You also see the Tropical Ravine which was designed by Charles McKimm and features a jungle of tropical plants growing in a sunken glen.

At the end of your tour you are brought back to Belfast's pier.
