TOUR DESCRIPTION

Koper Shore Excursion

This Koper shore trip visits the capital city of Ljubljana followed by visits to the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle, creating a sort of "Best of Slovenia" tour.

After meeting your guide in Koper, you start the drive to Ljubljana. The city has a small town feel and is well worth the visit. Ljubljana only has 300,000 residents so it is hard to compare it to other cities, but it's old town is easily reminiscent of Vienna, Paris or Salzburg.

When you arrive you enjoy a short walking tour to see the 15th century Town Hall, the Franciscan Church and the famous Triple Bridge. You will stroll along the old arcaded market between the Cobblers Bridge and the Dragon Bridge with its various dragon statues.

Next you enjoy a cruise in a small wooden boat along the Ljubljanica River. On the river the beauty of the surrounding architecture comes alive. You also sense the pulse of the city as you pass the university.

Before leaving Ljubljana you have free time for lunch (meal not included). There are many cafes along the river banks.

Your next stop this afternoon is the Postojna Caves which first opened to the public over 200 years ago and to date has hosted more than 37 million visitors from all over the world. For over 140 years, the Postojna Cave train has been taking visitors around the cave system, allowing you to travel about 3 miles of the underground system during your 1.5 hour tour. You will learn how the cave system was formed and marvel at the many beautiful limestone formations, especially the most popular one, aptly name Brilliant.

Located only a short distance from the Postojna Caves, you have the chance to visit the Predjama Castle, which is located in the middle of a towering cliff. Located almost 400 feet up a high cliff, the castle is listed with the Guinness World Record as the largest cave castle in the world.

The castle offers visitors an insight into medieval construction techniques of people who came here looking for safety at the entrance to the cave. Many visitors cannot tell where the man-made walls of the castle end and the natural walls of the cave begin. Those seeking refuge here had a place to hide, storage for food, a source of drinking water and passage ways to other exits. You will certainly be dazzled by the mysterious and impregnable castle which dominates the area.

At the end of your Koper shore excursion, your guide will bring you back to the pier in Koper.
