Lisbon Shore Excursion

If you are visiting Lisbon for the first time, this Lisbon shore trip provides an excellent introduction to one of the greatest cities in the world. You visit both the City Center and the Belem District, where most of Lisbon's top attractions are located.

After meeting your guide, you start your excursion with a visit to the Belem area which is famous for its landmarks dedicated to the marine discoverers. The area includes parks, gardens and monuments that are all well worth a visit. Your first stop is the Belem Tower, a UNESCO Heritage site and symbol of Lisbon. This fortified tower is where the explorer Vasco da Gama set sail on his voyage of discovery to India. While most tours only include a photo stop here, this tour includes an interior visit of the tower. During your visit you will learn about it's history and enjoy panoramic views of Lisbon.

Also in the Belem area you see the Monument of the Discoveries, which was constructed to honor the marine explorers, and to celebrate the 500 year anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator.

The next stop is at the imposing Jeronimos Monastery. This cathedral complex was built during the reign of King D. Manuel I, as was the Belem Tower. The small chapel inside is where Vasco da Gama spent the night praying before he left on his route of discoveries. The riches brought back from these discoveries paid for this glorious monument, which today is also a listed world heritage site.

Next you drive by the Eduardo IV Park to the statue of Marques de Pombal, the man who was responsible for the reconstruction of the city in the 18th century, after the devastating earthquake of 1755. Then you drive along the Mile-long Avenida da Liberdade taking you to the "Piccadilly Circus" of Lisbon, Rossio Square.

The next stop is at the Lisbon Cathedral from where you start a walking tour of the Medieval Alfama quarter which survived the 1755 earthquake and retained its Old World feel. It was once the most desirable neighborhood in all of Lisbon. You'll be glad you have your guide as you walk the maze of winding alleyways where every corner reveals a picturesque scene, whether a crumbling church or a panoramic view from a shaded terrace.

If time is available you can visit a typical Portuguese coffee house for a Pastel de Belem (typical custard Pastry) as well as a refreshing drink.

Please Note: This Lisbon shore excursion is not available on Mondays or major holidays when the sites included are closed. The prices shown below are not valid on weekends or local National Holidays.
