Wismar Shore Excursion - This tour explores the beautiful Hanseatic city of Wismar on foot. After your walking tour you enjoy some free time and then a visit to a brewery which was founded in 1229 to sample the local beer and enjoy the famous German pretzels.

After meeting your guide at the pier, you immediately set out on foot for the old town of Wismar, where you enjoy a walking tour of the Hanseatic city. Founded in 1229, Wismar was among the first cities established in the Mecklenburg Region. During your tour you see powerful religious buildings, imposing Gothic brick-style buildings, old city walls, the water tower, the historic drainage system and merchant's houses from the middle ages.

Walking through the old town, your guide reveals the architecture of the three main churches, St. Mary's and St. Georges, near the market place, and St. Nicholas' near the harbor. Each of them are reaching upward with imperial disdain, as if intending to trump all the other churches in the region. These structures are excellent examples of the late Gothic period, striking and spectacular achievements.

Even at the very beginning, people from far fell under the spell of the rapidly blossoming city: Merchants, guild-members, barrel makers, picklers, sailors, fishermen, traders and builders were drawn in from many lands and soon created a friendly hustle and bustle. In consequence of the thriving trade, pirates too were present.

After your walking tour you enjoy a short amount of free time before you get the chance to enjoy a local German beer. In the Hanseatic period, the citizens of Wismar drank Mumme, a then widely acclaimed strong dark beer. Hops were cultivated in 148 hops gardens and in the 15th century there were 182 brewers in Wismar.

Today you will enjoy a beer tasting and a traditional German snack within the nostalgic atmosphere of the Brauerei am Lohberg, a brewery and pub that started in the Middle Ages. You sample the medieval Mumme beer which is not as strong as it used to be, but it is still very tasty.

With smiles on your faces, your guide will walk back with you to the pier.
