TOUR DESCRIPTION

Private Patmos Shore Excursion

Patmos is considered sacred to many Christians because St. John lived here and wrote the book of Revelations here. This private Patmos tour visits the Cave and Monastery of St. John, plus allows free time in Chora, one of the island's most charming villages.

Patmos is one of the smaller islands of the Dodecanese, however, what it lacks in size it makes up for in beauty and history. Of all the Greek islands it is the most sacred to Christians, both Orthodox and Western, for it was here that St. John received his revelation. Although Patmos has many visitors, it maintains an aura of sacred serenity.

After meeting your guide you drive to the grotto of St. John. This small cave, now converted into a beautiful chapel, is where the Saint lived. He had his revelation and wrote the last book of the New Testament, the Book of Revelations here. Inside this splendidly adorned little church you see the stone orifice which is believe he used as a pillow.

Next you drive to the village of Chora, with its simple houses and Byzantine churches. It is from here where you climb steps to the Monastery of St. John the Theologian. Upon entering the courtyard of this imposing structure you see the intricate pavement designed with pebbles and the decorated arches. This ornate little chapel houses sacred relics which are stored in a silver coated chest. The old treasury is now a museum which displays a breathtaking collection of jeweled chalices, crowns, crucifixes, vestments and old manuscripts dating as far back as 1073.

After visiting the monastery you enjoy a short walk through the old winding streets of Chora which provides the opportunity to witness the beautiful old architecture of Patmos. After a short walking tour you have free time to explore the charming village on your own.

Please Note: No shorts or bare shoulders are permitted in the Monastery. Typically ladies must wear skirts and are offered a wrap to wear around the waist if a skirt is not worn. Please come prepared or you may be turned away.

Mobility: NO wheelchairs
