TOUR DESCRIPTION

Mytilene (Lesbos) Shore Excursion - This full day excursion includes a short driving tour of Mytilene followed by visits to two of Lesbos most charming towns, Agiasos and Molyvos. Free time is also included for shopping, lunch or swimming.

Departing from the pier you enjoy a scenic drive through the old town of Mytilene admiring in the background the Byzantine Castle. Continue your drive along the Eastern coast of the island towards the monastery of Saint Raphael which stands tall on a slope literally covered with olive trees.

Hidden in a forest ravine beneath Mount Olympus, Agiasos is possibly the most beautiful hill-town on Lesvos. It began life in the 12th century as a dependency of the central monastic church of the Panagia Vrefokratousa which was constructed to enshrine a miraculous icon reputed to have been painted by St. Luke.

Next you drive to Molyvos which is situated in a region celebrated in antiquity for its vineyards. It is the most popular town on Lesbos and of the most picturesque. It was the birthplace of Arion, the 7th-century BC poet, and the site of the grave of Palamedes, the Achaian warrior baried by Achilles. Overlooking the town, and affording splendid views of the Turkish coast, stands a large Byzantine castle. The castle (closed on Mondays) was modified by the Genoese adventurer Francesco Gatelluzi in 1373.

After visiting the castle you will have some free time for shopping, lunch or swimming. Later today you will be driven back to the port in Mytilene.

Mobility: Folding wheelchair OK, some sites may be inaccessible (advance notice required)
