TOUR DESCRIPTION

Zeebrugge Shore Excursion

This Zeebrugge shore trip visits the Proud city of Ghent. You enjoy a walking tour of the medieval old town and visit the gothic Cathedral of Saint Baaf. It is an excellent option for those who have already visited Bruges.

Your guide will meet you at the pier in Zeebrugge and you immediately drive to Ghent. While larger than Bruges, Ghent still retains much of the similar Flemish charm.

Upon arrival you enjoy a short drive through the city and then you begin a more in depth look with a walking tour. At St. Michael's bridge you enjoy the city's most beautiful views in every direction. You see the Old Harbor with its Guild Houses and St. Michael's Church. It is by far the most photogenic spot in town.

You continue your walk in the "Kuip" or heart of the old city where many beautiful buildings are seen at each corner. In the heart of Ghent you see the Gothic Belfry Tower which dates from 1425. Almost as impressive is the Town Hall, which is a mix of architectural styles due to the various centuries through which it was built. For those up to the challenge, it is possible to climb to the top for wonderful views over the old town.

Both young and old enjoy the Castle of the Count, a rare medieval gem from the 12th century.

After an extensive walking tour you have free time to rest your feet and enjoy lunch (meal not included) in one of the many caf̩s. Your guide will be happy to give you suggestions about the local specialties.

Later this afternoon is the highlight of Ghent, a visit to its gothic Cathedral of Saint Baaf. The cathedral is a living museum of sculpture, carvings, wrought iron work and art. The most important painting is "The Adoration of the Lamb of God" by the Van Eyck brothers. Your guide will provide detailed descriptions of the many scenes in this triptych. After studying this amazing piece of art, you depart Ghent and return to Zeebrugge.
